It is remarkable to think that a decade has passed since the ordinance was gazetted in 2016, transforming the Hong Kong Institute of Education into The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). As we commemorate this occasion, we reflect with immense pride on how far we have come together.

Since becoming a university, EdUHK has steadily advanced in its positioning, the breadth and depth of teaching, research, innovation, knowledge transfer, as well as national and global engagement.  Guided first by our principle of Education-plus and now Education Futures, we have evolved into a university with a more diverse curriculum.  Today, we offer 109 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, spanning education, psychology, data science, sociology, sports science, new media, personal finance and beyond. All of our 13 Bachelor of Education programmes have been transformed into double-degree pathways, broadening opportunities for our students. Our student population has grown by nearly 45% in the past decade to more than 16,000, during when we have nurtured over 52,000 educators and professionals who are making meaningful contributions in Hong Kong, the nation and the world.

In line with our academic diversification, our research has also expanded into new disciplines.  Beyond education technology (EdTech), we have strengthened expertise in neuropsychology, health technology, speech and occupational therapy, creating innovations that benefit the society.  Since 2018, our researchers have won 234 awards in major invention exhibitions. Knowledge Transfer has flourished, with income tripling year-on-year to HK$800 million in 2025, supported by over 170 government-funded research projects and 107 startup teams.

At the heart of these achievements are our people.  Last year, 54 of our scholars were named among the top 2 per cent scientists by Stanford University, and we continue to attract talent from around the world.  To prepare our students for the technology era, we are blending AI into curricula and enhancing staff training. We’ve also launched the Honours College to nurture leaders who combine academic excellence, innovation, and social responsibility. As a pioneer in supporting elite athlete students, we are proud to see that many of them have achieved dual success in academics and sports. In the National Games last year, over 40 students and alumni achieved historic success, clinching gold medals in five events.

Our growing network is also reflected on our national and global reach, with over 200 partnerships across 40 countries and regions, spanning leading institutions in Chinese Mainland, Europe, Central Asia, Middle East, the United States and Belt and Road nations, helping nurture our students into responsible citizens with global vision and a strong commitment to sustainable development.

We are happy to see that the world has taken notice.  This year, our education discipline achieved a record high in the QS World University Rankings by Subject - seventh globally and second in Asia. We also debuted 37th in Times Higher Education (THE)’s Asia University Rankings 2026 and 195th in its World University Rankings.  At a recently-concluded symposium, scholars from Harvard, Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale and Peking University came to our campus to share insights on how AI is reshaping interdisciplinary collaboration.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication, talent, and commitment of our students, scholars, staff, alumni, and the entire EdUHK family. You are the foundation of our success and the inspiration for our future.  With our infrastructure expanding – from EdUHK Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI) and EdUHK Shenzhen Educational Development Centre (SZEDC) to our new academic building and study centres in West Kowloon - we are well positioned to support the continued growth of our community.

In alignment with the national policy emphasising the integrated development of education, technology and talents, we will move forward under our Strategic Plan 2025-2031 and the vision of Education Futures. Let us celebrate this proud anniversary with gratitude, confidence, and ambition. The past decade has been remarkable, and I am certain that our best years are yet to come.

At this moment, we wish to extend our most heartfelt gratitude to The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the University Grants Committee, the Education Bureau, the Council of EdUHK, all our faculty and students, alumni, and every partner who has steadfastly supported the University’s development.  Thank you for all that you do for EdUHK. Let us carry this spirit of achievement into the future, and write the next memorable chapter of EdUHK’s journey together.
